Buying Green Coffee Beans – Even for Fellow Roasters – a Little “Co-opetition”

Our Green Coffee Buyer John Gozbekian and I had a chat last week about his role at Coffee Reserve Brands as the Green Coffee Buyer.  He stated that one of his roles is to develop relationships with other roasters. That networking has opened up the opportunity to supply green beans to them.  He says that one of his favorite aspects in supplying beans to other roasters is the “co-opetition” – a little cooperation with the competition.

As a Green Coffee Buyer, John is trained in buying coffee from the original source or from coffee importers, evaluating and grading the coffee, setting pricing and establishing blends.   John’s skill as a trusted buyer comes from over 30 years in the industry and from his relationships with reputable importers and growers.  John considers quality the central theme in the buying process.  John and the team at Coffee Reserve work personally with clients, including other roasters, to determine exactly what they are looking for in a finished coffee roast and provide the best green coffee.
